I wonder how much of your spam comes from robots?, have you tried capchats to cut down on the dumbest robots. I use the "Peter's Custom Anti-Spam" wordpress plugin which generates simple easy to read capchas that some robots will be able to decipher but which don't slow down legit posters. (Some of the capcha images out there are like rorshak patterns) It’s a shame to see dedicated doFolow advocates turning it off after getting on too many spammer lists.
